There's a particular kind of wellness idea we're drawn to: the ones that sound almost too simple to be real, and then turn out to have actual peer-reviewed research behind them. Grounding or earthing is one of those. The premise: your bare skin, touching the actual surface of the earth, and your body's inflammatory response, changing because of it. We wanted to know if that was aspirational thinking or genuine physiology. So we went looking.
THE SCIENCE
The research we kept coming back to is a 2015 paper published in the Journal of Inflammation Research, by James Oschman, Gaétan Chevalier, and Richard Brown. Their working theory: the earth's surface holds a virtually limitless supply of free electrons, and when skin makes direct contact with it, those electrons move into the body through the connective tissue, where they act as antioxidants at sites of injury or inflammation.

What struck us most wasn't the theory, it was the documentation. The paper includes infrared imaging of an old knee injury cooling down, visibly, after thirty minutes of grounding. It follows an 84-year-old woman with an eight-month, treatment-resistant diabetic wound who healed within two weeks of nightly 30-minute grounding sessions, reporting an 80% drop in pain after just the first week. A separate case study tracks a cyclist's leg wound from a Tour de France crash, showing minimal swelling just two days after the injury, treated with grounding patches from the start.
There's controlled research too, not just case studies: in one pilot study, subjects who slept grounded after a muscle-damaging workout showed measurably fewer inflammatory markers in their blood with lower white blood cell counts and fewer circulating neutrophils than those who didn't. Another found that eight weeks of sleeping grounded normalised cortisol rhythms in people struggling with chronic pain and disrupted sleep.
WHY THIS TRACKS
It also lines up with something we already intuitively believe about modern life: we've engineered ourselves out of contact with the earth. Rubber and synthetic shoe soles, elevated beds and high-rise apartments are all fairly recent developments. For most of human history, we were in near-constant contact with the ground, via thin leather soles and animal-skin bedding. The researchers frame our current disconnection as a kind of unintentional experiment, one we're only now starting to study the effects of.
HOW TO TRY IT
You don't need to overhaul anything. A few ways in:
- Barefoot time, outside, daily — grass, sand, and soil all count. Even ten to twenty minutes appears to make a measurable difference in the research.
- A grounding/conductive sheet for sleep — this is the version that requires zero lifestyle change, since it does the work while you're already lying down for eight hours anyway.
- Consistency over intensity — the studies that show the clearest results used sustained, repeated grounding (daily, over weeks), not a single session.
THE TAKEAWAY
What it is: a low-cost, low-risk, biologically plausible practice, with real documented outcomes, that's asking a genuinely interesting question about what our bodies lost when we stopped touching the ground. We're going to keep sleeping grounded and watching the research develop. Feels like a fairly easy bet to make in the meantime.
