Every wellness practice eventually gets its own corner of internet fear, and grounding is no exception. Search around and you'll find warnings that sound alarmingly technical: that grounding indoors turns your body into an antenna, that "dirty electricity" seeps into you through the cord, that grounding in a city is somehow riskier than grounding in the countryside. We wanted to know what was actually true, so we looked into the physics and the research.
THE CLAIMS WE KEPT SEEING
"You'll become an antenna for EMFs." This is probably the most repeated claim, and it inverts the actual physics. A grounded body functions like a Faraday cage, the same principle that keeps you safe inside a car during a lightning storm. Electromagnetic fields are reflected away from a grounded body, not drawn into it. As Gaétan Chevalier, Ph.D. in engineering physics, puts it in his research on the topic:
"When you are grounded, your body does not deal with added EMF pollution. That's just plain wrong. It's misinformation. On the contrary, your body becomes a Faraday cage that REFLECTS EMFs."
"Dirty electricity will flow into your body." This one hinges on a common misunderstanding of how household electricity actually works. Homes run on alternating current, which means the electrons in your walls aren't traveling toward you — they're oscillating in place, about one hundred-thousandth of an inch, fifty to sixty times a second. A 2016 University of Oregon study tested this directly: 50 people, grounded, near real EMF sources like desk lamps and printers. Grounded body voltage dropped 58-fold. The measured current was about 2,000 times below what a person can physically feel. None of the 50 participants noticed anything.
"City ground is unsafe — you need to shut off your breakers first." In practice, meaningfully elevated ground voltage is limited to very specific places — immediately next to power stations or electric rail lines. The IEEE (the professional body that sets electrical engineering standards) considers anything below 10 volts on a household ground wire safe; most homes measure under 2. A standard AA battery, for reference, is 1.5 volts.
THE EVIDENCE THAT MADE US TRUST THIS
The study that stayed with us: in 2017, researchers at Penn State grounded 26 premature infants in NICU incubators, an environment full of EMF-emitting monitoring equipment. If that claim about indoor EMF danger held any water, this is exactly where we'd expect to see it. Instead, skin voltage dropped by about 95%, and vagal tone, a key marker of nervous-system stress regulation, improved by 67%. A separate 2005 study, done in a hotel room full of normal ambient EMFs, found a conductive patch and bed pad reduced induced body voltage by a factor of 71.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
We're not going to pretend every experience is identical. Some electro-hypersensitive individuals report a brief adjustment period after starting to ground, often described as a mild "detox" reaction — before settling into the same improvements others feel right away. That's a real, worth-knowing nuance. It's a genuinely different claim from "grounding is dangerous," though the two get conflated a lot online.
THE TAKEAWAY
The scarier a claim sounds, the more it tends to fall apart under actual scrutiny and that's exactly what happened here. The physics checks out, the studies (down to the ones involving NICU infants) point toward benefit rather than harm, and the loudest warnings turn out to rest on a misunderstanding of how AC electricity behaves, not on new data. We're comfortable continuing to recommend grounding indoors, EMFs and all.
